Simone de Beauvoir

During our trip, I've learned that Simone de Beauvoir played a big role in the feminist movement. She wrote the second sex and really focused on the oppression of gender roles placed on women by society. I also thought it was interesting to learn that she never got married, despite having a romantic relationship with Jean-Paul Sartre, and they are buried together. My reaction to Simone de Beauvoir is that she seems like a really brave and smart woman. I don’t think there were a lot of other women stating their beliefs and opinions like her, and there were probably not very many people who agreed with her. I would definitely say Simone de Beauvoir was a trailblazer as a feminist. Her contributions to the feminist movement were important because they challenged a lot of beliefs and caused a lot of women to question their gender roles and how they have been treated, and it sparked movements for women's rights. Berlin Choice Woman

From a young age, Luise Greger has been extremely gifted. She started taking piano lessons at six years old and by the age of ten she was already giving performances to very important audiences. She played in front of the tzar of Russia when she was only ten years old, I would have been so nervous at ten years old! Later in life she got a divorce from her husband and had to support herself through her music. She was composing, teaching, and performing in order to survive. Once she was too old to travel anymore she moved into an old folks home and then was euthanized by the Nazis.  I think that her contribution is important because she was a woman and a jew and yet she still was able to write such beautiful music that was able to support her throughout her life. I feel like there was a stigma around women musicians in that they are less gifted and can’t compose complicated or impressive pieces, but she proved lots of people wrong. Madrid Choice Art

  For the art of my choice, I chose these two paintings by Juan de Sevilla that I saw at the Prado Museum. I had to take some sneaky pictures of them, but I thought they were super interesting! The first one called “Martyrdom of Saint Catherine” looks very chaotic and shows angels breaking the wheels next to Saint Catherine. There is definitely a triangle being made here! The three circles of the wheels and the circle around Saint Catherine's head make a triangle pointing towards her head. Not to mention there is also a person pointing to her head from the window behind her! The second one called “Beheading of Saint Catherine” is very colorful and I really liked all the different shapes going on in the painting and the way her hair is painted!  I think that this painting is important historically because it is portraying the story of Saint Catherine.
