Anne Frank

Anne Frank is probably one of my favorite women I’ve learned about so far, I just find it so interesting that a young girl has become so famous because of her diary that she never meant to be published. It is such a tragedy that so many young girls like her were robbed of a normal youth and a safe life, but it’s also so important for us to read her book and learn about the holocaust so we can be better prepared and more understanding towards these topics. I also didn’t know that she had wanted to become a journalist when she grew up so it's so amazing that her dream was fulfilled in a way.

Her contribution is so important because it really helps us to understand what life was like for the Jews who had to go into hiding during Hitler's rule. She is so honest in her book that you can see how she really felt and understand the constant fears and worries of their day to day lives that people today don’t have to worry about. I also think it's so important that it is a woman's story that is receiving so much attention because oftentimes they get overlooked in history, but she is taught in schools all over the world so everyone can hear her story and learn about her life.

I think that Anne Frank has definitely been commemorated well. Her father made a huge effort to preserve her story and share their lives with the public in order to educate people. The fact that her house is still intact is very impressive and I love that so many people want to visit it and see what it was like to be living in such a small place with so many people. She also is commemorated well by being taught in schools all over the world. I always enjoyed learning more about her in my history classes and think it is important that school curriculum continues to include her story and many other Holocaust stories.

  1. I love this Betsy! Learning about Anne Frank and going into the annex where she had to hide made me think about the persecution that existed in Amsterdam and how it has evolved past that. Just because a place is a cultural capital does not mean that it has a pristine history - in fact it probably means the opposite. I think it is important to realize that so much good can come out of a tragic past. I think that a lot of the obstacles Anne faced during this time have decreased today, but unfortunately anti-semitism still exists to a degree. It is important that we are aware of this and are actively fighting it.

  2. Awesome post Betsy!! Anne Frank was also one of my favorites too! I think it's so interesting that the number one tourist destination in Amsterdam is the annex in which this teenage girl and her family lived during WWII. It's especially interesting when you think of all the other families who had hid as well and yet somehow Anne's story is the one that's famous and being told. I think that's awesome and shows how much her story resinates with others and I think that just having the Anne Frank House as a tourist destination adds to the culture of the city because it acknowledges the bad past but also shows how human the victims were and how they lived normal lives just like us.
