Descubridores Monument
The Descubridores Monument was much larger than I was expecting it to be actually. When we were standing in line for the Chapel I was looking over at it and at first I thought it was just a cross because I was seeing it from straight on, but then I realized it was the Descubridores monument! I really liked looking at all the details on the men on each of the sides, I thought it was kind of fun that they each had things that made it so you could tell who everyone was based on what they invented or were known for. The way they were all positioned really drew your eyes toward the man at the very front holding the boat, Henry the navigator, and I think it shows that they were all moving in a new direction with their inventions.
This monument is important historically because it is a reminder of the people and things that helped Portugal be able to become what it is today. I didn’t actually know who any of the men of the monument were before our little class today, but I actually found it really interesting and wish we could have talked about each of them more. I was confused at first why Henry the navigator was at the front, but after we talked about how because of his ship they were able to expand their trade and go to farther places it made so much more sense. This monument shows so much of the history of Portugal and also that so much of the culture here was made possible through inventions like the caravels!
This monument contributes to Lisbon as a cultural capital because it is a popular tourist attraction. It is also really important because when people go to visit it can spark an interest in learning more about what it stands for and why it is in Lisbon. It definitely made me want to learn more about the monument and about the different men on the sides of it! The monument can also help us to remember where they started from and how technology has helped Portugal become as developed as it is now. Without these inventions, they would not have gotten gold, ivory, or slaves which all helped in creating many goods in Portugal.
