Vienna Treasury

I am choosing to write about the treasury! I loved getting to see all the crowns and fancy jewels that the monarchs used to wear, along with some of their artifacts. Something that I thought was really interesting was there were these crosses with really ornate bases to hold them up, and in the base of each of them was a bone! I’m not sure what the bones were supposed to mean or where they came from but I thought that was really interesting that they were a part of the treasury, they must have been really important! I also really liked it when their gloves or shoes had gemstones on them because it just looked a little silly honestly! Especially the gloves that looked like Thanos from Avengers.

All the artifacts in the treasury are important historically because they allow us to learn more about the monarchy and what the royals were wearing and surrounding themselves with on a daily basis. Now we have these artifacts and we can use them as milestones for art and clothing to tell the history of monarchies. It also is important because having the treasury makes it so not everything goes to one person or family. We were talking outside of the museum about what we would do with all the crowns and jewels and whether we would distribute them out or not, and I think making them accessible to the public is the best option because it feels the fairest.

The treasury contributes to Vienna's status as a cultural capital because it shows that Vienna has a lot of wealth and is where a lot of valuable objects are kept for the public to see. I think it also shows that preserving history is important to Vienna and that they want to encourage the public to learn more about the culture here and what Vienna used to be like back when they used these objects and wore crows and fancy robes. It also had many different types of artifacts not just crowns, so it shows that they are interested in more than just the fancy jewels.

  1. I really loved reading your post Betsy!!! Cute photos! I totally agree that this treasury contribute's to Vienna as a cultural capital because of it's display of wealth and their history. I think that each of these pieces has such an important part in sharing Vienna's history, especially how each of them got there. These artifacts came to Vienna in so many different ways such as trade and commerce, which I also think shows Vienna's status as a cultural capital. Great post!!

  2. Really nice post, Betsy! I think you're right that the treasury adds to Vienna being a cultural capital because it gives us a better understanding of its royal history. And with that, it shows that the city prides itself on its wealth and power. We see this especially as they showoff the royal crown(s).

  4. Wealth is a powerful thing. For this treasury, the monarchy plays a huge role. The crowns are directly from the monarchy. A cultural capital always has a connection to the previous or current monarchy and it’s important to understand the history behind the country. The treasury is also a great learning tool. The physical artifacts are available for the public to see, treasure, and ponder about.

  6. Betsy, great post! I like how you said the gloves looked like Thanos :) the National Treasury definitely uses its wealth, jewels, and royal history to draw people in. Because they make these items of high worth so accessible for easy public viewing shows how much they want their city to be one of the great cultural capitals of the world.
