Lisbon Choice Art

I’m choosing to write about the many different tiles I’ve seen here in Lisbon! I have loved seeing all the different patterns and styles of tiles that make each house so unique and beautiful! In the museum today there were also lots of tiles that came from Turkey and I loved how some of them made pictures when they were put all together, which is different than the ones of the houses that usually just make patterns. My favorite one I saw in the museum was called “Tile panel with prunus trees in moonlight”. It had a lot of different shades of blue that made a very pretty picture of a tree with flowers when they were all put together. It makes me want to have a tiled house when I’m older!

The tiles on the houses are definitely a huge part of the culture here in Lisbon! I would be interested to learn more about why they started tiling the houses here, and whether or not there was a purpose for them other than to make the houses more beautiful and artistic. From the museum, I learned that it is one of the things left here from when it was mainly Islamic and Iberians living here. These tiles show the history of Lisbon and how the culture of the Islamic and Iberians has been preserved and incorporated into the culture here today.

Tiles contribute to Lisbon's status as a cultural capital because it is one of the things it is known for. When I was walking through a street with a lot of souvenir stores there were lots that sold “Portugal tiles” and you could buy individual tiles like the ones on the houses here. It also is a great way for Lisbon to show that they are aware of the history behind the tiles and the importance of preserving that history. They don’t want to modernize their city the way some other places do, and instead, they embrace the different ways of doing and designing things that make them unique.

  1. You're so totally awesome and cool! I love how you talk about the tiles and not only their beauty, but the rich history and culture behind them. These tiles definitely embody the culture of Lisbon and can be found everywhere you look! I think that it was really interesting to learn about the Moorish people and how they influenced the tilework in Portugal. It shows how diverse this city really is, but also shows us a darker side of colonization.

  2. You wrote such a good blog post! I loved hearing about the tiles and how people recognize Lisbon because of them! I really appreciate that Lisbon doesn't want to modernize the look of their city, like you mentioned, and how that is what makes it such a well known cultural capital. They have such a rich history and I am so glad we got to see them!

  3. I loved your post Betsy! I loved the way you describe the tiles and the meaning behind it. I like how Lisbon openly shows the tiles on the outside of their houses and made it a part of their culture. It definitely shows how diverse Lisbon is.

  4. Awesome post Betsy! I like how you said that tiles are what Portugal and Lisbon are known for. There are lots of beautiful tiles there and as you said show how Lisbon cares about its history and doesn't just tear things down to modernize them. This way it stands out as a cultural capital instead of just another city
