EU Parliament
From the outside, the Parliament building looks huge and it has glass basically all the way around it. It's very modern in design and in its architecture. It's in Brussels because Brussels is considered the capital of the European Union. I thought it was really cool how at the entrance there were pieces of the Berlin wall on display. I have never seen a part of the Berlin Wall before and I think it is really symbolic of how this building is a place of unity and how it will be a place for change.
I think the EU Parliament is significant historically because there are a lot of decisions made there on issues that affect things on a large scale. Their main goal is to ensure peace and to stop wars from starting between countries. They also try to help the other countries that are a part of the union. There have definitely been some crucial changes made in this building that have affected European history, and also the union itself has had a lot of changes because new applications are made even today by countries who are wanting to join.
I think that it clearly contributes to the city's status as a cultural capital because Brussels is literally the capital of the European Union, but also it is a place where a lot of exchanges can happen. Lots of people come to the European Parliament so they can see how the European democracy works and the citizens of European countries can go there to see how their elected representatives are working and how their laws are being changed. Brussels is a very diverse city from what I’ve seen so far so I think that makes it a great place for the European parliament to be.
This is great Betsy! I think your thoughts on EU parliament would help create a wonderful answer for question 4 on the cities final. It has been such an influential institution! Like you mentioned, lots of important decisions get made there.
ReplyDeleteGirl you're so cute I love this. I think that this blog could definitely help you on the fourth question on the cities final. The Parliament building is such an important institution for Brussels and is a large part of making it a cultural capital. Your blog post does a great job of talking about how Brussels uses the politics that occur in the EU in order to help them maintain their cultural capital status.
ReplyDeleteI didn't think of the walls as symbols! I love that and especially how walls have to be torn down for there to be peace and unity. By symbolizing this, Brussels becomes a key and crucial part of Europe like you said. It brings people in and those people must work in harmony to create a harmonious Europe! love your post thanks for sharing!
