Vienna Choice Woman

For my Vienna choice woman, I am choosing to write about Empress Elisabeth of Austria, who was nicknamed Sisi. First of all, we spell our names the same which is awesome! I think it is really interesting that she did not like being royal and enjoyed a more relaxed lifestyle. She would spend most of her time at their summer estate or traveling to different places. Her beauty was also very important to her. She was known for having beautiful long hair and a very small waist. She would wear her corsets extremely tight in order to show it off! I honestly find her kind of relatable, if I were an empress I would probably want to escape to my summer estate too!

Elisabeth made many contributions during her time as empress. Because of her love for the people of Hungary whenever she visited there, she began to learn Hungarian. This in turn caused the people of Hungary to love her also! Hungary and Austria then became alliances because of her and there was a dual monarchy. I think that Elisabeth also probably brought a lot of attention to the different mental health issues people and especially women have. We talked about how she was obsessed with her beauty and looks and even had an eating disorder, which I imagine wasn’t talked about much during her time. But now it shows us that these things have been an issue for a long time.

She has definitely been commemorated well, when we were walking through the Volksgarten the area with her statue was one of my favorite parts. It is so beautiful and it's not the only one! She has many different monuments all over Europe. Even some of her apartments and places she visited often have been preserved so that people can go and visit them and see the places she stayed. There are also movies, ballets, and operas that portray her in them, so she has also been commemorated in the entertainment industry. I think that she deserves all her recognition, she was such a unique and interesting empress!

  1. I love that you picked this woman. She experienced many issues with eating disorders and other things that woman still consistently are experiencing today.

Learning about her helps us to learn about things how Austria cares about mental health and helps us to understand how Austria became so progressive with mental health.
